Bridge Crushing

Imagine Popsicle sticks, Elmer's Glue and a bridge built from scratch? Then imagine placing all your weight on the bridge to see if it holds? This is essentially the Cub Scout Bridge Crushing event.

Each Scout is given 100 Popsicle sticks, a bottle of Elmer's glue and details on the dimensions of the bridge. With supervision and help from parents or other family members, they design and build a bridge, decorating the structure as a final step.

We then load the bridge into the "crushing" machine and find out how much weight the bridge can withstand. As the numbers on the display increase, the experience becomes simultaneously exciting and nerve wracking.

We have had bridges support 500lbs!

The event ends with a head-to-head "crush off"between the pack and den leaders.
